warning: the following contains a rant against CVS and a rude grandma. if you are not a fan of rants, are an employee of CVS or if you feel especially protective of rude grandmas, you may want to wait until tomorrow's photo of the day to check up on me.

Just in case I forgot how rude people are capable of being, an unfortunate encounter at a local CVS served to remind me. The exchange went something like this:

the scene opens with me standing at a register with purse open and debit card in my right hand, and a bag of Boston Market in my left. I pay for my tube of Cortisone cream (a consequence of trapsing through the woods yesterday), put the small tube away and start to zip my purse, indicating that the transaction has concluded.

the clerk is an elderly woman with strawberry blonde hair and no apparent filter.


clerk: (to younger coworker at adjoining register) "look how skinny she is!"
(coworker says nothing, but looks at me awkwardly)
me: "um, okay. thanks."
clerk: "you're so skinny!!!"
me: "um, yeah. thanks."
clerk: "do you ever eat?"
me: "are you serious?"
clerk: "do you eat?"
me: (holds up bag of food and points)"yeah. I eat. bye."
clerk: "what, like once every other day?"
me: "really??? I eat. bye."
clerk: "God you're skinny!!!"
me: (flabbergasted, storms out of store)

following a series of unsuccessful attempts by my friend who witnessed this exchange to get me to stop fuming and spouting off all the things I wish I'd thought to say in the moment (a skill I REALLY need to work on) I called the store 20 minutes later and yelled at a somewhat dismissive manager until I felt marginally better.

Am I skinny? Hell yeah. Always have been. My parents are both slim and my attempts to gain weight as a child in hopes of not completely sucking at competitive sports, or being such an appropriate target for nicknames like "twig", "stick", or - in later years when seemingly every other girl was blossoming and I was still stuffing my training bra - "board", failed to yield results. I used to care deeply until I realized that caring deeply about something I couldn't change and didn't need to change was stupid, a waste of time and utterly self-destructive.

Do I eat?? Hell, Saturday's menu included a 3-egg omelette, 2lbs of home fries, half a pizza, and a hot fudge sundae. But I focus on being healthy most days, and when I don't feel good about myself I go outside and do something about it. I've struggled with body image issues my entire life and from time to time, I still do. Do I wish I had real hips? Sometimes. Do I wake up every morning thinking "wow, I'm SO HAPPY I'm an A cup"? Not really. But those are my problems and I'll be damned if I'm going to let some nosy grandmother at CVS tell me I need to eat a sandwich.

Book-to-Action participant Robin Peterson shows ""Nitty Gritty Dirty Farm's Slaw" (in hand) and "Summer Squash Carpaccio with Arugula, Pecorino, and Almonds" (on table) - recipes she found on JanetFletcher.com that she prepared at home to share with audience members.

The Hayward Library's focus on In Defense of Food created ripples throughout the community. Robin, who runs a Summer Camp with elementary school-aged children, shared the book with her Summer Camp participants, tying in the book with healthy-eating lessons. She plans to arrange a week-day field trip to the Hayward Community Gardens for the summer camp kids. "They too are enjoying In Defense of Food and have made posters with the theme, 'Eat Food, Not Too Much, Mostly Plants.' They love going to Kaiser's farmer's markets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and trying new fruits and helping chop it up when we get home. The children are eating healthier, learning about other cultures and what they enjoy eating, being adventurous and trying new fruits and vegetables, and being silly with it too. (They wanted to make their hair out of the very long Chinese green beans.) We also enjoyed a field trip to the health food store. Thanks for recommending this book and getting me excited about it. We are having so much fun."
